Lisa Mende completed the first year of the Arborist Registered Apprenticeship at Openlands and transferred to Cantigny Park in April 2022, where she will work for Years 2 & 3 of the program. She will continue building on her chainsaw experience, tree climbing techniques, and learning more about best practices of arboriculture and tree care. Lisa has already helped with a mature bur oak removal, helped plant, care for and maintain Cantigny’s young trees, and has learned to use new equipment like chippers and skid steers. Lisa previously worked as an ecological restoration intern for the Village of Glenview. Her work there for three summers consisted of removing invasive species from natural areas, planting native forbs, writing and editing grant applications, creating maps for the public, and engaging with residents about their trees and Glenview’s native landscape. Lisa was also the student representative of her university’s campus tree committee for two years. Lisa holds a Bachelor’s in environmental science from Northwestern University.
