CHICAGO (December 10, 2024) Openlands announces the appointment of Alan Bell as its new Board Chair, tasked with advancing the nonprofit’s mission to increase access to and connection with nature throughout the greater Chicago metropolitan area.

“In a region as densely developed as ours, nature needs proactive measures and a champion. Alan’s knowledge of real estate, commitment to Openlands, and life-long passion for the natural world make him the ideal board chair. I could not be more delighted, and I cannot wait to get to work,” said Openlands President and CEO, Michael Davidson.

Alan, a partner at the law firm Charity & Associates P.C., has been a dedicated member of the Openlands Board since 2008. During his tenure, he has served on many committees, including the Executive, Governance, and CEO Search & Transition Committees. He also co-chairs the DEI Integration Subcommittee and actively volunteers with Openlands’ Birds in My Neighborhood program.

Alan is a leader in public finance and public-private partnerships, bringing extensive experience in real estate finance and a deep passion for nature. He is the founder and CEO of the Elements Group, which carries out projects benefiting people and the environment and served on the boards of the Land Trust Alliance and the Garfield Park Conservatory. In addition, Alan chaired the Conservation and Policy Council of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, where he guided the implementation of the Next Century Conservation Plan. His commitment to community conservation focuses on expanding diversity and access to natural spaces, aligning perfectly with Openlands’ mission to protect and enhance the region’s natural resources for all residents.

“I am honored to take on this role and to continue the important work of Openlands,” said Alan. “I look forward to working with our dedicated board members and staff to ensure that our community’s natural spaces are preserved for future generations.”

Openlands’ immediate past Board Chair, JoAnn Seagren, joined the Board of Directors in 2014 and served as Chair from 2020 to 2024. She will continue to serve as a valued member of the Board.

The Openlands Board of Directors is composed of a dynamic group of civic, business, and environmental leaders from across the region who guide the organization’s strategy and long-term impact. A full list of current Board members is available here.
