Are you looking for hands-on opportunities to volunteer in Chicago parks? Or perhaps you are looking to connect with others who share your passion for trees while expanding your knowledge and appreciation for them? Join Openlands Forestry Program Coordinator, Liam Nigro, and Certified TreeKeepers at a Community Tree Care Day! These bi-monthly workdays, held in Chicago parks, provide a chance for TreeKeepers, Chicagoans, and community groups to unite and engage in tree care activities, like mulching and watering!
What is a Community Tree Care Day?
Twice a month, Openlands staff will facilitate a stewardship workday in a Chicago park for three hours focusing on tasks such as mulching, watering, pruning, and other essential tree care activities. Many of the trees being cared for were planted during an Openlands Tree Planters Grant community tree planting event.
Openlands will supply the necessary tools, water, and provide basic lessons in tree identification and care.
Who Can Volunteer?
-
- Aspiring TreeKeepers!
-
- Anyone in the community, including individuals and community groups, who are interested in learning, getting involved, and connecting with like-minded neighbors passionate about tree stewardship, are welcome to join.
-
- Organizations and community groups looking to organize a volunteer day for a large group are encouraged to reach out to Openlands.
-

Why Your Support Matters
By taking part in a Community Tree Care Day, you’re making a vital contribution to the health and growth of our community forest, helping to provide clear air, shade, and beauty for the people of Chicago. Trees in the city face challenges like compacted soil, heat stress, and vandalism. Through activities like mulching, watering, and pruning, we can significantly improve the overall health of Chicago’s Urban Forest. In addition, when people see others actively caring for trees, it creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to get involved, cultivating a sense of community engagement, and generating greater support for the urban forest, ultimately expanding the network of urban forest advocates.
How to Get Involved

- Signing up is easy! Whether you volunteer once or make it a regular commitment – every effort counts. Feel free to bring your friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers, and make a real impact in your community.
