Johan Martinez is a Forestry Program Coordinator at Openlands, a proud intersectional environmentalist, and active community member. In this role, Johan helps facilitate and organize the TreeKeepers Program, coordinate and support TreeKeeper workdays, and assist the TreeKeeper Chapters.

Prior to Openlands, Johan was at the Field Museum with the Keller Action Center as a Fellow United For Environment, Growth, and Opportunity (FUEGO), where he became familiar with the intricate environmental network in Chicago. As a Chicanx/Latinx Studies and Chemistry major from Claremont McKenna College, he found environmental sciences as a junction point for his two interests. Since then, he has immersed himself in the field. Johan has conducted research on artisanal small scale gold mining and the effects of mercury, air quality, volunteers at La Huerta Roots & Rays Community Garden in Pilsen, and goes on nature walks.
