CHICAGO (November 20, 2024) Michael Davidson, President and CEO of Openlands and member of the Vote Yes coalitions for DuPage, Kane, Lake, and McHenry Counties, released the following statement regarding the passage of the ballot measures investing in our region’s Forest Preserves and Conservation District:
Openlands celebrates the passage of four ballot measures that will expand protected lands, restore wildlife habitat, and improve park accessibility and engagement for all.
Together, these Forest Preserves and Conservation Districts care for over 105,000 acres of natural and open spaces for people and wildlife across the region. Voters resoundingly affirmed that nature is a sound and worthwhile investment. Over the next 20 years, the passage of these measures will collectively deploy an additional $669 million into nature for cleaner air and water, more accessible open space, and a healthier region for generations to come.
Our gratitude and congratulations go to all the Forest Preserves and Conservation District teams who work tirelessly to ensure residents have healthy, accessible, and enjoyable places to get outside. We are indebted to the hundreds of organizations, businesses, and volunteers who helped make these campaigns a success and who join us in celebrating these victories for people and nature.
The overwhelming support of voters this election cycle and Cook County voters in 2022 shows that nature is a necessity that taxpayers are eager to invest in. We hope officials across the state can see these successes and know there is a large constituency to support these critical investments.
Now more than ever, we need places close to home where kids and adults can shut off their devices and enjoy and unwind in nature. We look forward to supporting the positive impact that these investments in our Forest Preserve and Conservation Districts have on our region’s health and vitality.
