Alma Olavarría Gallegos supports Openlands as Policy Specialist, where she plans and implements policy agendas, serves on multiple campaigns and coalitions, and analyzes and drafts ordinances. With over five years of experience in organizing, Alma brings expertise in project management, community education, and facilitation.
Before joining Openlands, Alma worked at Access Living and Pegasus Legal Services for Children, where she worked closely with Latinx people, people with disabilities, and migrants to advocate for essential services. While leading the Disability and Immigration Taskforce of Illinois she assisted in providing bilingual educational resources for immigrants with disabilities. Alma holds a bachelors in Critical Theory and Social Justice from Occidental College.
Passionate about climate and environmental justice, Alma is known for creating and implementing solutions that uplift marginalized communities, equity, and protection of the Earth.
Favorite Place to Get Outside- the urban farm near her house. She enjoys biking, camping and dancing, and is a board member of Out Our Front Door.
