Openlands and Libertyville Township Open Space District partner to help manage and restore several sites in the Liberty Prairie Reserve, and we are looking for volunteers to assist in restoration workdays. Volunteers will receive instruction and guidance for each workday’s activity, such as remove invasive brush, plant trees, pull invasive species, or help in spreading native plant seeds.
Restoration workdays take place on the second Saturday of the month 9am-12pm at one of three sites in the Liberty Prairie Reserve, Oak Openings Nature Preserve, Liberty Prairie Nature Preserve, and Donnelley Prairies and Oaks Preserve. Please register in advance by sending an email to LakeCounty@openlands.org.
To save everyone some time at a volunteer workday, please download and complete the waiver below (you must complete a waiver to volunteer).
- Saturday, May 12, 9am-12pm at Donnelley Prairies and Oaks Preserve
- Saturday, June 9, 9am-12pm at Donnelley Prairies and Oaks Preserve (we need volunteers to help with planting 3,000 plants in a day!)
- Saturday, July 14, 9am-12pm at Liberty Prairie Nature Preserve
- Saturday, August 11, 9am-12pm at Oak Openings Nature Preserve
Workdays will take place every month through December 2018.
Oak Openings Nature Preserve is located on the east side of Route 45, 0.5 miles south of Route 120 and just north of Casey Road. Please note: it is only accessible when traveling north on Route 45.
Donnelley Prairies and Oaks Preserve is located at 17909 W. Casey Road, Libertyville, Illinois 60048. Look for signs on south side of Casey Road, just west of the intersection of Almond and Casey roads.
Parking for workdays at Liberty Prairie Nature Preserve is located at 18267 W. Casey Road in Libertyville on the south side of Casey Road. Please note: parking is allowed at this location only during scheduled workdays.
