Joseph Fedacsek joined the Openlands board in 2016. As a Senior Investment Officer at The Northern Trust Company, he leads team of professionals focused on providing clients with wealth management solutions for multi-generational families, corporate executives, and business owners. Northern Trust serves some of the world’s most sophisticated clients – from sovereign wealth funds and the wealthiest individuals and families. In helping clients determine and fulfill a longer legacy for their wealth, Joe was reminded of efforts led by his family when he was growing up to help prevent a large quarry from expanding on the Niagara Escarpment in Canada. The efforts of his family protected a property bisected by the 550+ mile Bruce Trail system and which was eventually transferred to the local conservation area for management.
“Thirty years later, friends who used to ride those trails with me are now posting pictures of their kids enjoying those same areas. With more of our lives spent in a digital environment both at work and play, being able to work on such an important, tangible benefit has even more meaning – this is what attracted me to Openlands.”
Joe and his wife Courtney reside in Highland Park, Illinois and have two children, Ashton and Joshua. Last spring break, they introduced their sons to the beauty of the Rocky Mountains during a trip to Banff, which ended with the request from their sons, “not to go back to Disney, but rather do more fun vacations in the mountains.”
“Having lived in a number of places that had little access to parkland, I am regularly reminded about the societal benefits to open spaces – whether simply seeing your neighbors walking the trails, allowing kids a natural, screen-free place to burn off energy, or a quiet walk with the dog after work. Someone’s forethought years ago gave my family the benefits of these parks and trails, and I look forward to working with Openlands to broaden this benefit.”
