Greenways

Openlands Greenways weaves a web of green that ties our region together. We work with local governments and the public to establish, expand, and protect greenways—linear open spaces—and land and water trail networks throughout northeastern Illinois and the surrounding region, including parts of Indiana and Wisconsin.

Greenways serve many important functions, such as:

  • Preserving and expanding of habitat for flora and fauna;
  • Storing and cleansing stormwater;
  • Creating a living laboratory for hands-on environmental education; and
  • Providing a place for people of all ages and physical abilities to enjoy life away from the noise, commotion, and crowdedness of our increasingly urban and suburban landscapes.

Openlands Greenways leads and collaborates in various regional projects, offers helpful how-to guides, and makes it easy for you to get involved. Click on the links below to find out more.
